1. National Museum of Ethiopia

Begin your exploration of Addis Ababa at the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the country’s most important cultural institutions. Located in the heart of the city, the museum offers a comprehensive look at Ethiopia’s ancient history and rich cultural heritage. The star of the museum is undoubtedly “Lucy” (or Dinkinesh), the 3.2 million-year-old fossil of one of the earliest hominids ever discovered.

2. Mercato Market

After your visit to the museum, head to Mercato, one of Africa’s largest and most bustling open-air markets. Known for its sheer size and energy, Mercato offers a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells, as it brims with vendors selling everything from colorful spices, fresh produce, and hand-woven textiles to intricate jewelry and wooden crafts.

 3. Entoto Hills

From the chaos of Mercato, make your way to the serene and elevated Entoto Hills, located just outside Addis Ababa. This tranquil escape offers stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscapes, including the distant peaks of the Ethiopian Highlands. The Entoto area holds deep historical and spiritual significance, as it was once the seat of Emperor Menelik II before the founding of Addis Ababa. You can explore Entoto Maryam Church, one of the oldest in the region, where Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul were married. It’s also a great spot to take a relaxing walk or hike, breathing in the cool mountain air while immersing yourself in the peaceful surroundings.

4. Holy Trinity Cathedral

Next, head back into the city to visit the iconic Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of Ethiopia’s most important places of worship. This impressive church, built in the 1940s, is a masterpiece of Ethiopian Orthodox architecture, with its beautiful domes, stained-glass windows, and intricately painted interiors. The cathedral is not only a place of religious significance but also a historical site, as it serves as the burial place for many of Ethiopia’s royal family members, including Emperor Haile Selassie

5. Ethnological Museum

Conclude your day with a visit to the Ethnological Museum, housed in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie, located within the grounds of Addis Ababa University. This museum is one of the best places in the city to explore Ethiopia’s vast cultural diversity, as it showcases an extensive collection of artifacts from different ethnic groups throughout the country. The exhibits include traditional clothing, tools, musical instruments, and even household items that offer a glimpse into the daily lives and customs of Ethiopia’s various peoples.
