After breakfast, depart for Lake Ziway, one of Ethiopia’s largest rift valley lakes, known for its abundance of water birds. The drive takes approximately 2-3 hours, passing through picturesque landscapes of farmland and distant hills. Upon arrival, explore the lakeshores, home to great flocks of pelicans, Herons, and Cormorants. The rich aquatic environment also attracts a variety of ducks and waders, making it a prime location for birdwatching. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy a relaxing evening by the lake.
In the morning, drive to Lake Langano, known for its peaceful waters and the wide variety of birds it supports, including African Fish Eagles and Common Sandpipers. After a morning of birding, head to Lake Abijata, part of the Abijata-Shalla National Park, famous for its large colonies of flamingos and other water birds like Grebes and Teal. The surrounding wetlands and grassy shores are home to a wide array of species, including Yellow-billed Ducks and Greater Flamingos. The day will be filled with opportunities to capture stunning bird photography across both lakes. Return to your accommodation for a well-earned rest.
After breakfast, drive to Lake Hawassa, another key birdwatching hotspot in Ethiopia’s Rift Valley, known for its prolific birdlife and tranquil setting. The lake’s papyrus wetlands are home to a variety of species, including the African Jacana, Pied Kingfishers, and Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters. The surrounding forests and open fields also offer excellent birding, with sightings of Black-headed Herons, Hammerkop, and Little Egrets. The plateau’s alpine meadows and moorlands are home to species like the Endemic Ethiopian Bush-crow, Giant Molerat, and Scarlet-chested Sunbird. Early morning birding is best here, as the plateau is often misty, providing dramatic backdrops for photography. Spend the day exploring the plateau's expansive views and pristine landscapes while also looking for Lammergeiers and Rock Thrushes. Return to your lodge to relax after an exhilarating day of birding.
