Day 01 :
Arrival in Addis Ababa
  • Morning: Arrive in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s bustling capital. Settle into your hotel and relax after your journey.
  • Afternoon: Take a light tour around the city to explore key sites such as the National Museum of Ethiopia or Holy Trinity Cathedral, where you can learn about the deep religious significance of the Meskel Festival.
  • Evening: Head to Meskel Square to witness the early preparations for the Meskel Festival. The square begins to fill with excited locals, and you’ll see the construction of the huge Demera bonfire, which will be lit the next day.
Day 02 :
Meskel Festival - The Grand Celebration
  • Morning: In the morning, head to Meskel Square to find a good spot for the grand procession. Watch as the Ethiopian Orthodox priests, deacons, and laypeople march through the square, chanting and singing religious hymns. The colorful procession is accompanied by the waving of crosses and flags, filling the air with energy and devotion.
  • Afternoon: Explore the festival grounds and interact with the locals who are dressed in their finest white garments. You can also enjoy street food or shop for local crafts as the area around the square becomes a lively festival hub.
  • Evening: As the sun sets, gather at Meskel Square to witness the lighting of the Demera bonfire. The bonfire, which is a key symbol of the festival, is ceremonially ignited by the priests, signifying the discovery of the True Cross. The sky is filled with prayers, songs, and the vibrant warmth of the fire, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of unity and joy.
Day 03 :
Post-Festival Exploration & Departure
  • Morning: After a late start, enjoy a relaxed breakfast and a visit to the Ethnological Museum or Addis Ababa Museum to learn more about Ethiopian culture and history.
  • Afternoon: You can also explore Mercato, one of Africa's largest open-air markets, for unique souvenirs such as handcrafted jewelry, Ethiopian textiles, and coffee beans.
  • Evening: If time allows, enjoy a final Ethiopian meal before heading to the airport for your departure.
